So far this season, I have attracted two types of Hummingbirds to my feeder. While they remain very wary , it is possible to get a good look at them as they feed early in the morning.  The smaller of the two types is the Black-chinned Hummingbird. It is a winter resident here and the male is the only hummer with a truly black throat. It can be seen capturing small flying insects, which I find interesting.  The female is indistinguishable from the female Costa’s Hummer, so look for the male with the black throat.

The second type  is a much larger bird that has so far eluded identification. I will keep trying!
