The 2010 shrimping season closed March 30th. In spite of a threatened boycott by the US against Mexican shrimp, the entire catch this spring has already been sold ahead of the April 20 deadline to upgrade the turtle release mechanisms on the nets. The shrimp captains had promised to use the release mechanisms, but there was no enforcement or inspection. In August or September, the US will once again send teams of inspectors to Mazatlan so perhaps next year, the turtle doors will be in use. Turtles can hold their breath for several hours but shrimpers leave their nets down all night and the entrapped turtles drown. Besides, they make great soup.
