Seasons Greetings Everyone!
Thank you all for your generosity and involvement in the Friends of the Isla program this year.
Our fundraising events and funds raised included:
The Poker Run 9920 p
50/50 Draws. 12050 p
Beach Games. 2100 p
Silent and Live Auctions 21950 p
Also, we received many generous donations from people on the Isla, Estrella, Mazatlan and friends and family from our “summer” homes.
We were able to help 62 families this year, providing them with vouchers to “spend” at Freddie’s and the Super Deli. They are able to purchase food and personal items. Most families received vouchers worth 500 pesos and larger families, 900 pesos.
Thank you again for helping us help others.
For a little historical background:
About 15 years ago, a small group of expats who wintered on the Isla, got together to provide Christmas food hampers to some of the less fortunate local families; in time they began to contribute funds to assist the lifeguards, the local medical centre with medical supplies and contribute to various causes as needs arose.
Over the years, things evolved and the fundraising has been concentrated on providing “food” vouchers at Christmas time, a winter clothing distribution to some of the more needy families, plus providing for families in crisis on an ”as needed” basis throughout the season.
In past years we have distributed monetary vouchers to some of the less fortunate families during the Christmas season. The vouchers can be used as cash in two of the local stores. The recipients determine what they choose to purchase, i.e. food, personal hygiene and household goods, (no alcohol or tobacco).
Our experience has been a learning, for the last number of years we ask for assistance from the elected community leaders in the Colonia (i.e. the 4 presidents currently serving the term in office) to compile the list of recipients for the vouchers.
We are aware that as in most communities throughout the world, there are many causes to which one can contribute. There is often discussion about who or which sector of those in need one should assist.
For us decisions are based on where we think we can best make a difference. As we are guests here on the Isla, we are fortunate to have the support of the community leaders to help us make our contributions.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2020!!
